7 Ways to Make the Most of your Coworking Space
So, take it from me, I've been working out of co-working spaces all over Asia for the last 5 years. The best thing about co-working is the community - you're surrounded by talented, focused, freethinking people who sincerely want you to succeed in whatever it is you're doing.
So if you're new to the concept, here are some things you MUST DO to tap into this stream of awesomeness.
1. INTRODUCE YOURSELF
Don't be afraid to tell people who you are and what you do - introduce yourself to fellow coworkers. Most people will give you a friendly nod in passing so take the opportunity to introduce yourself and ask them what they do. A community starts with one introduction.
2. BE APPROACHABLE
We get it, you're here to work, which means sometimes you need to get your headphones on and knock it out. But, if you’re open to a hello, a chat or question, don’t plug in. Headphones are the universal coworking sign that you don't want to be disturbed. If you want to be part of the community, plug in only when you need to so people can see when you're open for an introduction or friendly chat.
3. ATTEND WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS
Workshops, events, socials and happy hours are a great, relaxed way to learn about your fellow coworkers, celebrate your achievements and make a few connections. You'll get a great feel for the culture and space. If something is not of interest at all, don’t feel like you need to make an appearance, but if something is remotely on your radar, check it out. You may be happy you did.
4. BE HELPFUL AND GENEROUS WITH YOUR TIME
Sometimes if you don't give a little, you won't get a little back and I have seen this work religiously in coworking spaces. Because of the diversity of its members, coworking spaces are built-in networks of just about everything you need to start and grow your business, even if it's a solid referral. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to help out and the more you help people, the more willing people are to help you. It's worked for me, if you share generously of your time and knowledge, when you need help, people are more than happy to lend a hand. In a true community coworking space, generosity and an underlying spirit of helpfulness are the heart of everything.
5. FOLLOW YOUR FELLOW MEMBERS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
This is a great way to share your experience and enthusiasm and it enables your space to showcase its humanness and community with a retweet or repost. How refreshing would it be to actually know some of the people you follow in social media. It also gives you great topics of conversation since you get some insight into your fellow co-workers life and not in the stalker way.
6. TRY DIFFERENT WORK AREAS
Don't be that person that always sticks to the same corner. You never know what productivity comes from a different space. You might find our standing desks don't strain your neck and leave you quite energised to knock out work, it could be the greatest thing ever. I change up where I sit to keep things fresh and I encourage you to do the same, but move around a bit until you find your favourite areas.
7. SHOW UP REGULARLY
Coworking hourly / day passes are great. They allow you to get a feel for coworking with zero commitment. That being said, as with a family, the best parts of a coworking community come through spending hour after hour, day after day, year after year together. If coworking speaks to you, and you really want to give it everything you’ve got, show up. Day after day after day. In my experience, coworking absolutely gets better the more you give. And, bonus, you’ll surprise yourself with how productive you are. We are currently offering new Monthly Block Packages view our rates >>
