Dipping a toe into our hood
Community Centre Co-working Space has a great location slap bang in the heart of Craighall Park - a vibrant slice of suburbia bordered by Parkhurst, Parktown North, busy arterial Jan Smuts Avenue and the greenbelt of the Delta Park / Braamfontein Spruit.
Last week I was chatting to one of our regulars.. she was having a challenging time with sick children and animals and general life management. She told me the only way she manages to get through her daily stuff is being able to access so many local shops and services. Craighall Park has everything she needs close by - whether that's a doctor, a veterinary hospital, supermarkets, bottle stores, POSTNET, pharmacies, restaurants, hairdressers, nail bars - Craighall Park has it all. Community Centre Co-working Space fits right into her lifestyle - being local and convenient. Having listened to her, I decided to explore a little...
Arguably, easy access to Delta Park is a top attraction allowing runners, walkers, mountain bikers and dog walkers the opportunity to get out into a wonderful, large, open, green, public space.
The REEA Foundation urban farm complex is situated along the Spruit and adjoining the popular Colourful Splendour Nursery. This precinct hosts a number of attractions including The Delta Cafe, Bamboo Palace and the REEA secondhand bookshop and charity shop. I kicked off my weekend with a delicious coffee at The Delta Cafe then took a wander through the nursery, stopped off at the stables and let my kids have a pony ride. Next I checked out The Bamboo Palace (they host some lovely creative courses), popped into the charity shop in search of a vintage find and browsed the shelves at the second hand book shop. The Rambling Rose party venue and the Gerakaris Family Winery are also part of the REEA space and are great options for functions, launches or parties.
Craighall Park has great variety when it comes to eating out. Our location ALBANS SQUARE is home to Warm & Glad, offering some of the most delicious Asian Fusion food we can find in Joburg and Ace & Pearl, a fine wine and gin bar which is a nice alternative to the legendary watering hole Giles historically hugely popular with the after-work drinks crowd as well as weekend sports junkies looking to catch the big game. The Cnr Cafe is a well established eatery particularly popular for innovative breakfast choices and centrally situated on Buckingham Avenue. A recent addition is AJ’s in the Park, a popular family restaurant in situ at the Craighall Sports Club. Here children can happily play on disused bowling greens, a jumping castle and jungle gyms and if you are into old school fun like, kites and croquet, you will have a blast. Dolci Cafe (Jackie and Clayton are also locals) in Lancaster Village is a little slice of Italy serving up authentic Italian fair as well as amazing confectionery and cakes. If you are looking for something hot and spicy there are two Indian restaurants, Red Hot Chilli Spice and Namak and for easy eating, RocoMamas has burgers, ribs and wings and is a great spot for a quick and informal bite. My kids love building their own burgers.
All of this in in a couple of hours of exploring! I haven’t even got to check out other neighbourhood legends like THE VIDEO SPOT (one of Joburg’s best DVD shops), Davenports, a highly recommended appliance shop and repair centre, all the hairdressers, nail bars and specialist retail shops. I’m going to catch my breath order a pizza and contemplate round two of discovering Craighall Park.
